Foam

Note: Foam (includes closed and open cell foam)

Examples of where you might find foam:

  • Absorbers
  • Padding
  • Produce packaging materials
  • Rollers
  • Sponges

Notes about the surface:

  • Foam is a porous surface and can be difficult to clean and sanitize.
  • Many foam surfaces draw water inside the material and can become a harborage point for potential pathogens. Foam sponges, if improperly maintained, will be a source of contamination. To avoid cross-contamination, thoroughly wash and dry them to prevent sponges from being a source of contamination.
  • Foam produce packaging is intended for single use.
  • If reusing, remove surface dirt and insert a single-use plastic liner or other protective material between the foam surface and the produce as a risk reduction strategy.
