Steel and iron
Examples of where you might find steel and iron:
- Equipment surfaces
- Tools (e.g. harvest knives/scissors, hoes, shovels, snips)
Notes about the surface:
- Not recommended for food contact surfaces. Clean and sanitize properly and allow to dry completely to prevent leaching of the iron into food products.
- Avoid acidic cleaners and sanitizers because they are corrosive to steel and iron.
- Caution: iron can easily rust, and needs to be maintained to reduce the potential for corrosion which results in flaking/peeling/chipping. Corroded iron can contaminate food products and must be prevented from occurring.
